Prem Menon: The Businessman Who Tried to Build His Own Action-Hero Universe in Tamil Cinema

Long before today’s self-funded star vehicles and franchise attempts, Prem Menon tried to create his own action-thriller space in Tamil cinema through Krodham, Krodham 2 and Ashoka.

Prem Menon, also known as Prem Kumar Menon, is an Indian businessman, former actor, screenwriter and director who worked in Tamil cinema. Unlike many actors who entered the industry through theatre, television or assistant-director routes, Prem Menon came from a business background and carved a small but distinct identity through action-thriller films. He became known through Krodham in 1982 and later continued making films where he was often closely involved as actor, writer, director or producer.

A Businessman Who Entered Cinema

Prem Menon was born in Kuwait on 15 October 1953. He is the son of entrepreneur K. T. B. Menon, whose business interests were linked with Kuwait. Prem Menon later headed Laksola, a company producing insulating materials. His financial success allowed him to pursue his interest in Tamil cinema.

This makes his film journey interesting. He was not a conventional star launched by a major banner. Instead, he used his own resources, confidence and interest in action cinema to create projects around himself.

Breakthrough with Krodham

Prem Menon became known with Krodham in 1982. The film was directed by A. Jagannathan, and Prem Menon not only starred in it but was also credited as the storywriter.

Krodham became the film most strongly associated with his identity. For many Tamil cinema followers, he is still remembered as “Krodham Prem.” The film placed him in the action-thriller zone, a space he would continue to explore in later years.

The Action-Thriller Phase

In the early 1990s, Prem Menon continued with films such as Vetri Karangal and Veeramani. He acted in these films and was also involved creatively. Vetri Karangal credited him as storywriter, while Veeramani had him as both actor and director.

His filmography shows a clear pattern: Prem Menon was not merely acting in films; he was trying to control the creative direction of his projects. His cinema leaned toward action, revenge, thriller elements and strong male-centric narratives.

Krodham 2 and Later Experiments

In 2000, Prem Menon returned to his most recognised brand with Krodham 2, where he acted and directed. The film starred him alongside Radhika Chaudhari and Khushbu. It received mixed reviews, with criticism noting that the action eventually moved into melodrama and tedium.

Later, in 2008, he made a comeback with Ashoka, a thriller that he wrote, directed and produced. He also played the role of a security guard. The film was noted for being unusual in Tamil cinema at that time because it reportedly had no songs and no separate comedy track, which made it stand apart from the regular commercial format.

Why Prem Menon Is an Interesting Tamil Cinema Figure

Prem Menon may not have become a mainstream superstar, but his career is worth revisiting because he represents a different type of film personality: the self-driven businessman-filmmaker-actor.

He entered cinema with financial independence, created projects around his own screen image, and repeatedly returned to the action-thriller genre. His career also shows that Tamil cinema has always had space for unusual personalities who may not fit the conventional hero mould but still leave behind a recognisable identity.

Conclusion

Prem Menon’s journey is not the story of a superstar, but it is the story of a man who built his own corner in Tamil cinema. From Krodham to Ashoka, he followed his interest in action thrillers and took on multiple responsibilities as actor, writer, director and producer.

For fans of lesser-discussed Tamil cinema personalities, Prem Menon remains an interesting example of ambition, self-belief and independent filmmaking spirit. 🎬
